Florida 49

file0001659953596I live in suburbia. I am made fun of by several friends quite religiously. Many of them know I spent many years living in Chicago and wonder how I could go from such an urban area to such a non urban area overnight. Let me tell you, it took some getting used to, along with some help from city noise cd’s.

My district is the UCF district: Florida House district 49. The University of Central Florida is the second largest university in the country at just over 60,000 students. Presently, my representative is Joe Saunders who experienced great turnout last year to help him win the new seat. I’m sure he’s hoping for a similar experience next year. Universities tend be blue. Representative Saunders is banking on that.

Representative Saunders is a Democrat. Without mentioning his challenger last year, I don’t think it’s any secret to those who know me or read me for whom I voted. But, if I could give Representative Saunders any advice it would be this: expand. Don’t expand on social media, you’re already incredible at that, and maybe one of the best lawmakers in that regard. Expand your policies. Presently, you’re a one subject representative.

Your subject is equality. That is very admirable and, truly, I appreciate that work and advances you are making. But, you have to appeal to more people to keep your job. Take a stance on other issues and let your constituents, myself included, know where you stand. Show me where you stand on the Affordable Care Act, education and something obviously close to my heart, capital punishment.

When you and I spoke last summer, we had a lengthy discussion about accountability. You have made great strides in equality. But where have you been on other issues? Before you can be accountable to me and your other constituents, you must be accountable to yourself. Ask yourself, have you done everything you can to better this new district 49? I bet, if you look deep down, you will say no and you will want to do more. Show me how and you will guarantee my vote in 2014.
