I’m a proponent of live and let live. People should be able to hold their own beliefs and opinions except when those opinions are rooted in some alternate reality. Todd Akin, Republican Senate candidate in Missouri and current congressman from the Missouri 2nd, said that women who are legitimately raped rarely get pregnant.
I surely hope he doesn’t actually believe his comment and he just made the ultimate gaffe. This has become such an issue now that even the President made an unscheduled stop at the press podium saying: “Rape is rape, and the idea that we should be parsing, qualifying and slicing what types of rape we’re talking about doesn’t make sense to the American people.”
Both Governor Romney and Representative Ryan have denounced the comment by Representative Akin. But, wait! Not more than a year ago, Representative Ryan co-sponsored a bill in the House that would have redefined rape for purposes of Medicaid funding creating protections for victims of “forcible rape” but no provision for any other kind of rape, as if there was any other kind. The co-sponsor of that bill? Representative Todd Akin.
