Television Replicates Life

Yes, people use television to escape reality. But, I recently read an article on Right Wing News which argued that the current television shows do not provide any options for people with morals. I took slight offense to this as I consider myself a person with morals and I enjoy some of the shows the author seems to think would send people on a nonstop flight to hell.

The second most popular TV show last fall was Modern Family, which features the lives of three families, including two gay men and their daughter. There is profanity and one episode implied that teenage sex was appropriate. The Big Bang Theory was the third most popular show last fall. The plot is based on the lives of some nerdy guys and a beautiful woman who tries to teach them social skills. It features frequent discussions about sex including masturbation, and is sprinkled with profanity.

A gay couple? And they have a daughter?! Oh, the horror! We can’t subject our children to such nonsense on television, even though it’s commonplace in reality. I get that some topics may be too much for a young child or you, as a parent, aren’t ready to discuss certain topics with your kids. As with all things in life, you do have a choice: you can change the channel. Maybe there’s nothing else on any channel. Well, here’s a novel idea: pick up a book or, gosh, talk to one another. There are alternatives to watching shows you don’t want to watch.

The author makes an interesting point: “Whether one has a problem with gay sexual orientation or not, why does sex and profanity need to be a theme in so many shows?” I would agree that sex and profanity is prevalent in shows, though, I would disagree that it’s the theme. But, the author wants to know why. Because sex and profanity is prevalent in life!

Television replicates life, plain and simple. Sure, it doesn’t replicate everyone’s life but, as a whole, television discusses what everyday people in this country are discussing. I would venture a guess that certain people aren’t entirely disturbed by the shows, rather, they’re repulsed by the way certain people have chosen to live their lives. Just like changing the channel, you don’t have to watch me live my life.
