Vacation

Vacation is necessary. Everyone needs time away from the grind to recharge. For some, that means a weekend in Vegas. For others, that means a week on a deserted beach with electronics hundreds of feet away and thoughts even further away. For most, it’s something in between.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury of getting away, regardless of how badly one might need the time away. Fortunately for me, I can take that time to recharge and, for me, that is best accomplished by spending some time hiking in the Grand Canyon with my brother. Every trip, I am awed by the beauty of the Canyon.

Once you get a few feet below the rim, the non hiking tourists cease to exist. You only come across fellow hikers and, if you’re not hiking on one of the corridor trails (the most heavily traveled and the trails mules use to carry supplies down to the river), you rarely see another human being. It is simply you and the Canyon. You can easily find yourself just standing in one spot, awestruck for many minutes taking in the many different views just one spot can offer.

Pictures cannot do the Grand Canyon justice. I cannot stress enough how crucial it is for each person to see the majestic beauty, especially if you are capable of hiking below the rim. There is no sense of accomplishment greater than hiking to the river and back out, standing at the rim, looking all the way down not even able to see how far down you hiked and back out again. Views from down at the river gazing back up at the rim (which is difficult to see) offers a scenic look unmatched by those at the top. One of my favorite sayings about the Canyon is this: One Minute. Don’t Read. Don’t Talk. No Photos. Just Look… And See.

My brother has done that before and said it was absolutely gorgeous. I definitely want to do that, too. Looks beautiful.
