I am absolutely sick and tired of hearing from the Right these past few days about how all the Left does after a tragedy like that in Newtown, Connecticut, is exploit such a tragedy to further the Left’s stance on gun control. By the way, it’s not just gun control, it’s bullet control, it’s mental health control, it’s societal and cultural control.

We on the Left are not exploiting a tragedy. We realize that the 312 million or so residents of this country are very forgetful. We move on very quickly. Yes, moving on is part of the healing process but you must also remember, not to the point where you relive the experience, rather you must remember and learn so that this does not happen again. If we remember, we can affect change. If we forget, we are simply doomed to repeat.

This reaction that some of us in this country are having is not a knee jerk reaction. It may be a little emotional because of the victims involved but it is a reasonable and logical response. When aircraft were first used commercially, there were actually several instances of aircraft colliding mid-air. Absolutely tragic. Was it a knee jerk reaction when the FAA was created and roads in the sky were created and air traffic control was created in an effort to prevent such further tragedies from occurring? I think not. It was a reasonable and logical response to an issue which required addressing.

The same is true of guns in this country. It is an issue which requires addressing. I’m not so egotistical to think I have a solution. In fact, there isn’t one right solution; there are simply some solutions that are better than others but none are perfect. So, what do we do? I don’t know. But, what I do know is that we do not avoid the issue, we do not avoid discussing that which needs to be discussed. It is not going to be easy but we must continue discussing until we reach a satisfactory solution. We can not prevent such tragedies from occurring, we can only hope to make them occur on a much less frequent basis. The only way to do that is to address the issue and continue a discussion. I fail to see how that is exploitation.
